Waiting for Confidence

“I’ll do it when I feel more confident” is a phrase many women have told themselves. In fact, you may have said it yourself.
I’ll speak up when I’m more confident. I’ll apply for that opportunity when I’m more confident. I’ll launch the program, raise my rates, have the difficult conversation, or pursue the next chapter when I’m more confident.
At first glance, that seems reasonable. Confidence feels like the prerequisite for action. We assume that successful people act because they are confident. But what if we’ve got it backwards? What if confidence is the result rather than the starting point?
One of the biggest myths that keeps women stuck is the belief that confidence must come before action. The reality is that confidence is often built through action.
Think about a skill you’ve mastered over time. Perhaps it was leading a team, starting a business, facilitating a workshop, or speaking in front of a group. Chances are you weren’t completely confident the first time you did it. You learned by doing, you gained experience, you made mistakes, you adjusted, and over time, your confidence grew.
Yet when we face a new challenge, we often forget this lesson. We expect ourselves to feel confident before taking the first step, even though every previous success in our lives was built by stepping forward before we felt fully ready.
The women I admire most are not fearless. They are not always confident. What sets them apart is their willingness to act despite uncertainty. They understand that courage and confidence are not the same thing.
Courage says, “I’m willing to try,” while confidence says, “I’ve done this before.” One comes before the other.
Within the W.I.S.E. Framework, this is where Expansion begins. Expansion happens when we stretch beyond what is familiar. It requires us to trust ourselves enough to take action, even when the outcome isn’t guaranteed.
Growth rarely happens inside our comfort zone. It happens when we decide that our desire for progress is greater than our fear of discomfort. You don’t need to wait until you feel completely ready. You don’t need permission. You don’t need a guarantee.
You simply need the willingness to take the next step, because confidence isn’t built by waiting. It’s built by doing.
Think about a goal or opportunity you’ve been postponing because you don’t feel confident enough. What is one action you could take this week that would help you gain experience, and begin building the confidence you’re waiting for?
